Sleep is super important for everyone, but especially for teens. When you sleep well, your body and brain get a chance to rest and recharge. But many middle school and high school students don’t get enough sleep. There are a lot of reasons for this, like early school start times, heavy homework loads, lots of activities after school, and busy schedules. There are many factors that go into how sleep affects your body and mind, and what can alter your sleep schedule.
Amount of sleep for teens
High schoolers should be getting between 8 and 10 hours of sleep per night, but the nationwide average for insufficient sleep is 77.3% of high schoolers. Having a night here and there where you get less then this won’t affect your whole life, maybe your day, but not your whole life. Not getting the right amount everyday however, can result in being overweight, and not engaging in daily physical activity, give symptoms of depression, cause risky behaviors like drinking and drug use, and poor academic performance.
Conclusion
Sleep, schedules, and teen health are all connected. Early school start times, heavy homework loads, and too many activities can make it hard for teens to get the sleep they need, which is the recommend 8-10 hours a night. When teens don’t sleep enough, it affects their physical health, mental health, school performance, and daily life. But with good habits, balance, and support from families and schools, teens can get better sleep and feel healthier, happier, and more successful.
